Project Overview

The project was delivered to strengthen drinking water quality and improve chlorine residual performance across Hunter Water’s distribution network. Maintaining an appropriate disinfection residual is an important component of managing drinking water in accordance with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG), helping control E. coli and other pathogens as water moves through the distribution system. Eire Constructions was engaged to undertake upgrades across 12 existing reservoir sites throughout the Hunter region, supporting Hunter Water in achieving its required water quality performance targets.

Delivered under a GC21 Design & Construct contract framework, Eire’s scope encompassed the detailed design and construction of new chlorination buildings and associated chlorine dosing, water quality analysing and mixing systems. The multidisciplinary design program incorporated process, hydraulic, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and control engineering, together with ACMM development, HAZOP and CHAZOP processes and commissioning. The works required the integration of new treatment infrastructure into existing operational reservoir sites, demanding careful investigation, design coordination and construction planning to protect existing assets and maintain continuity of operations.

A key feature of the project was the concurrent delivery of works across multiple geographically dispersed sites, requiring strong program, resource and stakeholder management. Eire established robust site investigation practices, including non-destructive digging to reduce the risk of interaction with existing underground services, while specialist consultants supported the development of safe work methodologies for higher-risk activities including confined space works and the handling of dangerous chemicals. Detailed project reporting, coordinated commissioning and ongoing collaboration with Hunter Water supported the successful delivery of a complex, multi-site infrastructure program focused on protecting drinking water quality for communities across the Hunter region.
